It seems Markham is writing a biograph on Miss Houghton. Then He goes on discussing Dr Lucky, Prof. H.P. Carlton Miss Houghton again and Mrs. Dorcas. Dr Lucky was a principal with Carlton as Vice Principal and Houghton and Dorcas as assistants. He continues with a biograph on Prof. Carlton, again dicussing Houghton and finally ending with Mrs. Clark as a motherly figure.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
